About
the Songs...
SOMETIMES
WHEN WE TOUCH, 1977...In 1977, my music
publisher set me up with legendary songwriter Barry Mann. (The writer
of "On Broadway" and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling",
among other classics.)
I met Barry and instantly liked him. But I felt intimidated when
he started playing me one killer melody after another. It was obvious
to me that he was expecting me to come up with equally good lyrics,
equally fast. This was my first time collaborating and I felt like
I was clearly in over my head. So as a last resort I reached into
my back pocket and pulled out the typewritten lyrics to "Sometimes
When We Touch." I left the room to call for a taxi. Barry had
the chorus melody written before the taxi arrived.
The next day Barry tracked me down by telephone at the Polo Lounge
in Beverly Hills. While I held the receiver to my ear, he sang the
entire song. I told him I wasn't used to hearing someone else's
melody to my words. The next day, we used a $25 tape deck to record
the song. Everyone who heard it went crazy. I knew then that we
were on to something. |
